Overview
Kushiro is the fourth largest city in Hokkaido and the largest in Eastern Hokkaido, offering a slower, more rural pace than Sapporo while serving as the gateway to Japan's largest marshland. The city is a year-round habitat for endangered Japanese cranes (tancho), making it a premier destination for birdwatchers.

Food
Kushiro excels at seafood—whale meat (kujira) is a local specialty. Robatayaki grills at Fisherman's Wharf MOO operate spring through fall. Two kaitenzushi chains (Matsuriya, Nagoyakatei) offer affordable conveyor belt sushi.
Money
Japan uses yen (JPY). Credit cards accepted at hotels and larger restaurants, but many local establishments are cash-only. 7-Eleven and Japan Post ATMs accept foreign cards.
Safety
Prone to offshore earthquake tremors. Standard earthquake preparedness applies. City is generally very safe for travelers.
Transport
Kushiro Airport has domestic flights via Air Do and ANA. JR Super Ozora connects to Sapporo in ~4 hours. Local buses are Japanese-only and difficult to navigate; taxis are cheap and recommended for city travel.
Weather
Cold winters with heavy snowfall (320cm January average). Summers are mild (July avg 19.6°C). September is the wettest month at 153mm. Summer ideal for wetland exploration; winter tourism viable but some attractions limited.
