Festivals
The Kumano Hanabi Taikai fireworks festival on August 17th is one of Japan's biggest. Book limited express train tickets two weeks in advance.
Food
Mikan (mandarin oranges) are the local specialty, available from farm stands for a few hundred yen when in season. The town has gift shops selling mikan cell phone straps.
Language
People from Kumano speak a specific dialect that may sound like a variation of Osaka dialect. Older residents may be hard to understand but will try to help with their little English. English pamphlets available at the tourist office.
Safety
Kumano is generally very safe. A few drunken men may wander at night, but locals are honest and will return lost items.
Transport
JR Kisei line connects Kumano to the region. Nanki Limited Express runs 4-5 times daily from Nagoya. Coming with a car is recommended for flexibility.
