Overview

Krems an der Donau is the main gateway to the UNESCO-listed Wachau Valley, a stretch of Danube corridor famous for steep vineyards producing some of Austria's finest white wines. The town combines a well-preserved medieval old city (Krems and Stein) with excellent wine culture, easy access from Vienna (under 90 minutes by train), and a range of budget-friendly Heurigen wine taverns.

Language

German is the local language; English is spoken at tourist offices, hotels, and younger-oriented venues but limited at traditional Heuriger.

Austria uses the Euro (€). ATMs are widely available in town; credit cards accepted at hotels and some restaurants but many Heuriger and small shops prefer cash.

Transport

Regional trains connect Krems to Vienna (75-90 min) and onward to St. Pölten/Linz. Bikes rent for €10/day via Nextbike or €15/day at Zweirad Aichinger. City bus costs €2.10 per trip.

Wine

Krems is the main town of the Wachau, Austria's most famous wine region. Riesling and Grüner Veltliner from steep terraced vineyards are the signature wines, available at Heuriger wine taverns at attractive local prices.
