Overview
Kotka is Finland's southeasternmost major city, an important port at the mouth of the Kymi river (Kymenjoki) where the Baltic Sea meets inland waterways. The municipality has a population of around 52,000 (2020) with much of its area made up of water.

Language
Finnish is the primary language; Swedish is also official. English widely understood, especially in tourism-related businesses.

Safety
Generally very safe city; violent crime rare and usually between criminals. Avoid queuing at hot dog stands at night; drunken fights occasionally occur.
Transport
Kotka centre (Kotkansaari island) is walkable; bus, taxi, or hire car needed for Karhula and other districts. Two railway stations: Kotka (Kotkantie 1) and Kotka harbor (Satamakatu 9).
