Overview

Komsomolsk-on-Amur is a quarter-million-person industrial city in the Russian Far East, the 3rd largest after Vladivostok and Khabarovsk. It's not a sightseeing destination in the conventional sense, but it works surprisingly well as a short stopover on the Baikal-Amur Mainline (BAM)—especially if you have an interest in photography.

Before you go

Connectivity

Internet cafes exist (Escape Internet Cafe) but WiFi availability in hotels and public spaces is not well documented.

Language

English signage is minimal. Russian is the primary language throughout the city. Tour agencies like Nata Tour have English-speaking staff.

Money

Hotel Voskhod requires cash payment in advance on a daily basis. ATMs are available in hotel lobbies but card retention is possible if no buttons are pressed within 20 seconds.

Safety

The city is generally safe for travelers but exercise caution near the river current and industrial areas upstream. Some areas around the Church of Holy Prophet Elijah may feel dodgy.

Transport

Tram lines 1-5 connect the railway station (4 km from river front) to the river terminal and bus station. Tram 2 and bus 17 are most useful for station transfers.
