Nagaland is predominantly Christian with strong tribal traditions. Ask before photographing people. Respect local customs and dress modestly.
Food
All residents are non-vegetarian. Try local specialities like pork with fermented bamboo shoots and dishes made with Rajha Mircha, the world's hottest chilli.
Money
India uses the Indian Rupee (INR). ATMs are available in Kohima. Nagaland is a cash-based society - carry sufficient cash for your trip as card acceptance is limited.
Safety
Kohima is generally safe. Standard precautions apply. Road conditions can be poor, especially during monsoon. Travel permits required for certain areas.
Transport
Most visitors arrive from Dimapur by road. Within Kohima, walking is ideal for the compact centre. Local taxis (Rs. 100-200) and city buses (₹20) are available.
Weather
Best visited October to March. Winters are cold (carry warm layers). Summers (June-August) are warm and very rainy. Avoid monsoon season for trekking.
