Why go?

Ko Lipe is a small island paradise in the Butang/Adang Archipelago, 50km from Langkawi and 200km southeast of Phuket. Known as the "Maldives of Thailand," it offers white sand beaches, world-class diving and snorkeling, and a relaxed atmosphere without the crowds of more developed Thai islands. The island is home to the indigenous Urak Lawoi ("sea gypsy") people, and tourism coexists alongside traditional fishing and farming communities.

Getting in

Speedboats from Pak Bara (67km east) and Langkawi, Malaysia (50km northwest) are the main access routes. From Pak Bara, speedboats cost around ฿700-1,200 and take about 1 hour. From Langkawi, boats take about 1.5 hours and include immigration processing. As of January 2024, a new plastic pontoon floating pier has been constructed. All visitors pay a ฿200 national park fee upon arrival, which is valid for entry to nearby islands.

When to go

The high season runs from November to May, when weather is dry and seas are calm for diving. Peak months are December through February. The monsoon season (June-October) brings rougher seas and some closures. Two annual Urak Lawoi spiritual festivals called pla juk or loy rua occur during full moons in late May/early June and late October/early November, lasting three days each. February 6 marks Bob Marley's birthday celebration at Home Reggae Bar.
