Overview
The Knuckles Mountain Range offers some of Sri Lanka's finest trekking through a UNESCO World Heritage Site recognized for its unique montane forest ecosystem. The range features 34 cleared hiking trails ranging from gentle 1.5 km walks to demanding 15-20 km summit treks reaching elevations of 1800 m.

Before you go
Money
Day hikes cost approximately Rs. 5000-6000 per person including guide, permits, and transport. Bring cash to Matale or Hunnasgiriya as ATMs may be limited.
Packing
Bring all food, water (2+ liters), snacks, leech repellent, rain gear, hiking boots, and fully charged devices. No facilities inside the reserve.
Safety
Leeches are common in wet weather—carry Dettol or leech repellent. Very limited mobile reception; inform hotel of your plans and expected return time.
Transport
Access via Matale (bus 08 from Kandy/Colombo or train) or Hunnasgiriya (buses 14/22 from Kandy). No public transport into the reserve—guide or tour required.
Weather
Best visited December to April during the dry season. Avoid rainy periods when trails become hazardous and leeches are most active.
