Standard Japanese is universally understood. The local dialect is unique, descended from the Nara-period Eastern Dialect, with greetings like Ojariyare (welcome).
Money
Bring sufficient cash from the mainland. No ATMs or banks are mentioned on the island. Payment is primarily cash-based.
Safety
Do not swim at high tide or during storms. Waves are dangerous and have caused deaths from drowning and impact with lava rock.

Water
Kitadaito has no natural freshwater sources. The island operates a desalination plant to convert seawater into drinking water.
