Overview

Kirishima-Yaku National Park straddles Kagoshima and Miyazaki prefectures in southern Kyushu, offering a dramatic landscape of volcanic peaks, steaming hot springs, and sacred Shinto shrines wrapped in near-constant mist. The park is one of Japan's oldest national parks, established in 1924, and remains famous for its geothermal activity—visible steam pillars and sulfurous scents are common throughout the area.
