Overview
Kautokeino is the heart of Sámi culture in Norway, hosting the Sámi University College, Nordic Sámi Institute, and Beaivváš Sámi Theatre. With only about 1,500 inhabitants in the town and 90% Sámi population, it offers an authentic window into indigenous life far from tourist crowds.

Language
Northern Sámi is the primary language. Norwegian and English are widely spoken, especially among younger residents and in tourism. Sámi University provides cultural resources.

Currency is Norwegian krone (NOK). Credit cards widely accepted in town. ATMs limited; withdraw in Alta or bring sufficient cash for remote areas.

Car essential for exploring; 130 km to nearest city (Alta). Buses limited. Nearest airports: Alta, Hetta (Finland), Ivalo (Finland), Kiruna (Sweden). Nearest rail: Kiruna, Sweden (250 km).
Weather
Extremely cold winters (mean -15°C January, records near -50°C) with polar night December–January. Summers are cool (12°C July mean, occasionally frost). Midnight sun May–July.
