Overview
Alta is the largest town in Finnmark county, Northern Norway, with about 21,000 inhabitants and serves as the regional hub for the municipality. The town sits at the inner end of Altafjorden and marks the entry point to the vast Finnmarksvidda plateau.

Major Norwegian carriers (Telia, Telenor) offer 4G coverage in town. Free WiFi at hotels and library. Type F electrical outlets (220V/50Hz). No tourist information centre permanently located; as of 2012 it was at Nordlys Hotel.
Money
Norway uses Norwegian Krone (NOK). Credit and debit cards are accepted almost everywhere including taxis and small shops. ATMs available at banks and some convenience stores. Norway is expensive; budget 400-600 NOK daily for basic needs.
Safety
Alta is very safe with low crime. Main risks are winter driving on icy roads and standard outdoor hazards. Always check weather forecasts and leave itinerary with someone when hiking.
Transport
Alta Airport (ALF) has flights from Oslo, Tromsø, Kirkenes and Hammerfest. E6 highway connects Alta to Kirkenes (north) and Narvik (south). Bus services connect communities but schedules are limited on weekends.

Sub-Arctic climate with extreme seasonality. Summer (May-August): 10-20°C, midnight sun from late May. Winter (Nov-Feb): -5 to -15°C, polar night, northern lights season. Spring and autumn are brief transitions.
