Why Go

Kata Yai and Kata Noi are two adjacent beaches on Phuket's west coast, 20 km south of Phuket town, offering a scenic village feel with clear water flanked by hills and offshore Ko Pu (Crab Island). Kata Yai is more family-oriented than Patong with a peaceful one-kilometre beach, safe swimming with no drop-offs, and a coral reef extending toward Crab Island. Kata Noi, one kilometre south, is smaller with fewer hotels and superb snorkeling along its shoreline.

Getting In

From Phuket International Airport, minibuses run to Kata Beach for about 180 baht. From Phuket Town, small open-air buses cost 30-40 baht, departing from the municipal bus terminal and the backpacker area of Ranong St (just west of the traffic circle). These buses pass through Karon first, then wind back through Kata, dropping passengers near the beach where many hotels are located.

Getting Around

Kata centre is walkable with shops, restaurants, and bars along the main road running from the Karon end to Kata Noi. To reach Kata Noi from Kata Yai, take the narrow beach road that climbs over the hill. Songthaews and motorbike rentals are available for reaching attractions further afield like the Chalong Bay area.

When to Go

Peak season runs November through April with dry, sunny weather ideal for beach activities. The rainy season (April-September) brings surfing conditions—expect fast, mushy beach breaks and short rides, with Kata Noi working best on low tides. The local Thursday market near Kata Rd showcases local fish, spices, and traditional food, while fire dancing shows at Ska Bar add evening entertainment on Fridays.

Where to Stay

Accommodation ranges from budget bungalows to luxury resorts. Kata Noi Club Bungalow (3/25 Patak Rd) offers 20 rooms from 450-1,000 baht, while Kata Rock Inn Seaview provides air-con rooms with hot water and satellite TV from 800+ baht, just 2 minutes from the beach. Mid-range options include Rico's on main Kata Rd (1,500 baht with pool) and Beyond Resort Kata on Pakbang Road (from 200 USD). For splurges, Kata Thani Phuket Beach Resort offers 400 rooms from 5,665 baht with low-season deals, and Mom Tri's Villa Royale features 63 rooms from 14,000-25,000 baht.

Food and Drink

Kata centre offers well-priced restaurants with good food. Thai favorites include The Red Chair Cafe on Koktanod Rd (70-120 baht, popular with locals and expats) and Red Chair Plus nearby for upscale Western-Thai fusion (200+ baht, try the fajitas). The Tube on Koktanod Rd serves an all-you-can-eat BBQ for 199 baht with surf movies and a salad bar. For caffeine, Summer Coffee House (184/1 Khoktanod Rd) provides air conditioning, free Wi-Fi, and pastries from 09:00-22:00. Evening drinks include After Beach Bar overlooking Kata Noi (100-350 baht with reggae and ocean views) and Ska Bar at the south end of Kata Yai Beach, a beachfront social hub with fire dancing on Fridays.

Things to Do

The north side of the bay offers great shallow snorkeling and diving with equipment available from dive centres in Kata. Rumble Fish Adventure (98/79 Kata New Rd, Beach Centre) is a PADI 5 Star facility offering courses from beginner to instructor levels from 200 baht. Surfing is best during the rainy season (April-September) with beach breaks; board rentals available from Phuket Surf at the far south end of the beach. Unique attractions include a jungle sauna reachable by a 10-minute walk at the south end toward Chalong Bay—featuring a copper kettle boiler, menthol-scented steam from tree bark, a plunge pool, and cafe. KT Plaza near Black Canyon Coffee sells souvenirs and apparel.

Go Next

From Kata, mini-buses to Phuket Airport cost about 250 baht when booked through travel agents on the main Kata road; the bus picks up directly from hotels. Taxis to the airport run 800-1,000 baht—always negotiate the price before departing. Kata makes an excellent base for exploring southern Phuket beaches including Karon (north) and Rawai (southeast), as well as the Big Buddha and Chalong Bay temples.

Safety

Kata Beach offers safe swimming with no drop-offs, suitable for children and non-swimmers. Always observe the colored flags flying at the beach—they indicate current safety conditions for swimming. The coral reef on the right side of the bay extending to Ko Pu is navigable for snorkeling but avoid touching or standing on coral. Local fishermen can be spotted on the rocks at the beach's right side.

Connectivity

Most hotels and cafes offer free Wi-Fi; Summer Coffee House provides 15 free minutes of internet access with drink purchases. Mobile SIM cards from providers like AIS, TrueMove, and DTAC are widely available at 7-Eleven stores throughout Kata. Thailand uses Type A, B, and C power plugs (230V/50Hz), so bring appropriate adapters for international devices.
