Why go?

Kasane sits at the meeting point of four countries—Botswana, Namibia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe—making it a major transit hub for overland travelers. The town is best known as the gateway to Chobe National Park, famous for its massive elephant herds, and as a convenient base for day trips to Victoria Falls. Despite its small size, Kasane has a functional tourist infrastructure with lodges, restaurants, and tour operators catering to every budget level.

Get in

Kasane is accessible by road from multiple directions: paved roads connect from Zambia and Zimbabwe to the east, from Katima Mulilo in Namibia to the west, and from Botswana's Francistown, Maun, and Gaborone to the south. Mahube Express buses run from Kasane to Francistown twice daily at 13:30 and 15:30. Minivans connect Kasane with Katima Mulilo in Namibia, and buses from Francistown continue to Lusaka in Zambia via Kasane. By air, Kasane International Airport (BBK) serves scheduled flights to Gaborone on Air Botswana and to Johannesburg on South African Airlines. Charter flights from Maun are also available. Note that elephants roam the land near the airport, so arrange transport in advance rather than walking.

Get around

Kasane is a linear town stretching along the south bank of the Chobe River, with the main road following the river's course. Many destinations between Chobe Safari Lodge and Mowana are within 2 km, making walking viable. Taxis gather at the northeast corner of the Spar supermarket—always negotiate the fare before departure. Taxis display a specific Kasane taxi organization label, making them easy to identify. Consider getting a taxi driver's phone number for later use, as rides can be arranged by calling ahead.

When to go

The dry season (May to October) is peak safari season when wildlife congregates at water sources. The wet season brings green landscapes but fewer animals visible. Victoria Falls day trips are most impressive during high water season (February to May), though the border crossing logistics remain the same year-round.

Things to do

Game drives in Chobe National Park immediately west of town are the main attraction—every lodge offers these, typically lasting 3 hours to all day for a fee that may include park entry. Self-drive game drives are possible with a proper 4x4 vehicle, camping reservations, and sufficient water and fuel. Chobe River cruises cost about P320 per person, usually running 3 hours from 15:00-18:00 through sunset in small boats (6 passengers) or large double-decker vessels. Day trips to Victoria Falls (70 km away) cost P400-500 for unguided excursions, plus US$30-55 visa fees and US$20 park entrance.

Buy

The Chobe Safari Lodge gift shop sells useful maps including the Shell Map and Infomap of Botswana, bird and plant field guides, plus T-shirts, carvings, and souvenirs. For provisions, Shoprite is well-stocked with hours 08:00-19:00, while Choppies Supermarket (08:00-18:00) offers affordable prices and good parking. ATMs from FNB, Absa, and Bank Gaborone are available in the Shoprite area.

Safety

Kasane is generally safe for travelers, but standard urban precautions apply. The main safety concern is wildlife—elephants roam freely in the area, including near the airport and outside town. Never approach wildlife, and be especially cautious at dawn and dusk. The river area can attract opportunistic theft, so keep valuables secure.

The Bureau de Change charges P15 for the first 30 minutes and P10 for each additional 30 minutes. Many lodges including Elephant Trail and Chobe Marina Lodge offer free WiFi for guests.

Go next

Chobe National Park is immediately west of Kasane, accessible by road. Directly east lies Kazungula near the four-country meeting point of Botswana, Namibia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe—the new bridge crosses directly to Zambia. Note that crossing requires a permitted cab; you cannot walk across. Roads lead south to Nata, Francistown, Maun, and Gaborone via paved roads. The unpaved western roads to the Okavango Delta and Maun require a 4x4 vehicle.
