Overview

Karratha is a purpose-built mining city in the Pilbara that serves as the gateway to Murujuga National Park, home to one of the world's oldest collections of Aboriginal rock art dating back over 47,000 years. The city itself is entirely modern (built from 1968), but the surrounding region offers extraordinary natural and cultural attractions: ancient petroglyphs on the Burrup Peninsula, the 'staircase to the moon' optical illusion on mudflats, and access to the Dampier Archipelago's 42 islands.

Why go?

Karratha is a purpose-built mining city in the Pilbara that serves as the gateway to Murujuga National Park, home to one of the world's oldest collections of Aboriginal rock art dating back over 47,000 years. The city itself is entirely modern (built from 1968), but the surrounding region offers extraordinary natural and cultural attractions: ancient petroglyphs on the Burrup Peninsula, the 'staircase to the moon' optical illusion on mudflats, and access to the Dampier Archipelago's 42 islands. It's a practical stop for road trippers on the long haul between Broome and Exmouth, and for those willing to brave the intense heat, a remarkable window into both Indigenous Australian heritage and 21st-century industrial scale mining operations.

When to go

The climate is hot and semi-arid year-round, with summer temperatures around 36°C (feels like 38°C) and cool nights around 30°C. Exceptional summer heat can push apparent temperatures to 48°C during the day and 35°C at night, making outdoor activity dangerous. Most rainfall occurs in the hot, humid summer months. The best time to visit is during Australian autumn/winter (April-October) when temperatures are more moderate and the 'staircase to the moon' phenomenon occurs on full moon spring tides March through October. Key events include the Roebourne Races in June and July, and Nickol Bay Speedway race meetings April through September.

Getting in

Qantas and Virgin operate several flights daily from Perth (2 hours non-stop, around $600 return). Aviair provides local flights from Newman, Paraburdoo, Port Hedland, and Broome. Karratha Airport (KTA) is 14 km northwest of Karratha and 5 km southeast of Dampier, with car rental from all major companies at the terminal. Integrity Coaches run 3 nights per week from Perth taking 25 hours along the coast via Dongara, Geraldton, Carnarvon, and Exmouth; the bus stop is on Welcome Road outside the shopping centre and the 2022 adult fare was $600 return. These buses continue east to Port Hedland and Broome. By road from Perth, follow the North West Coastal Highway, which continues east to Port Hedland meeting the Great Northern Highway via Mount Magnet and Newman, and onward to Broome.

Getting around

PTA Bus 881 runs 2-3 times daily east from Dampier to Karratha (45 minutes), continuing to Roebourne, Wickham, and Point Samson; bus 880 is the westbound service. The stop on Welcome Road is the closest thing to a downtown hub. Taxis wait outside the Shopping Centre: Karratha Taxis (13 13 30), Karratha Silver Taxi (13 50 60), and Premier Taxi (0439 747 800). You need your own vehicle to explore the National Park—rent a car at the airport. A 2WD gets you to most places including Deep Gorge, but you need high-clearance 4WD for the top of Burrup Peninsula.

Where to stay

Karratha offers limited budget accommodation but several options exist. Karratha Backpackers at 21 Wellard Way (500 m east of town centre) is the main hostel option, with recent positive reviews after a difficult period around 2020. Aspen Karratha Village in Baynton offers budget cabins (B&B double from $150), though noise can be an issue. For mid-range, Ibis Styles on Searipple Road, Karratha International Hotel on Hillview Road, and The Ranges Best Western on De Witt Road all offer B&B doubles from $200. Dampier Caravan Park at 198 The Esplanade charges $40 for powered caravan sites (open April-October, community-run, max 3 nights). Food and drink

Karratha's dining scene is limited but functional. Lo's at The Quarter Shop, 24 Sharpe Ave (north side of Shopping Centre) is reliable for breakfast or lunch, open 6AM-4PM. Hearson's Bistro within the Ibis hotel serves daily noon-2PM and 6PM-9PM. Bollywood Lounge at 23 Sharpe Ave is the only Indian restaurant in Karratha, open daily 5PM-9PM. For drinking, Northwest Brewing Company at 100 Mooligunn Rd is a microbrewery and pub with good ale selection (Tu 4PM-10PM, W-Su 11AM-10PM). Other options near the shopping centre include Florita Wine Bar, Blanche Bar, Sweet but Psycho, and Evolution. Wickham (on the access highway) has Rambla bar and bistro. Things to do

The signature attraction is Ngajarli (Deep Gorge) within Murujuga National Park, featuring Ngarda-Ngarli Aboriginal rock engravings over 47,000 years old, explored via a 700-metre boardwalk accessible free 24 hours with best viewing in afternoon light. Hearson's Cove (1 km east of Ngajarli turn-off) offers swimming at high tide and public toilets. Red Dog, the famous Pilbara cattle dog (1971-1979), is commemorated at the entrance to Dampier—he became a community mascot before being poisoned. The North West Shelf Visitor Centre on the Burrup Peninsula explains the gas facility (usually W 9AM-noon). Mount Wongama lookout is reached via Burrup Road turnoff with 2WD. The Yaburara Heritage Trail is a 3.5 km walk between Tank Hill Lookout and the Leisureplex. Red Earth Arts Precinct on Welcome Rd offers theatre, live music, and cinema. Golf is available at Karratha Country Club (5891 yards, par 72). The Leisureplex charges $20 for daily drop-in access to gym and pool. Pilbara Dive and Tours (1 km west of shopping centre) offers diving around the Dampier islands. Beaches are east along Searipple Road with boat ramp at Back Beach.

Day trips

The Dampier Archipelago comprises 42 islets west and north of Dampier with fine beaches, marine life, diving, snorkelling, and fishing (camping permitted). Roebourne (east on the main highway) was a gold-rush town in the 1880s with several historic buildings including the old gaol now housing the Visitor Centre. Cossack is a small village north of Roebourne with a museum and beach for viewing the staircase to the moon; nearby is a memorial to Red Dog. Point Samson is a resort village at the end of the sideroad. The Montebello Islands (174 islets 200 km west of Dampier) require boat access and are beyond day-trip range. East to Port Hedland, turtles nest on its beaches despite the dusty industrial port.

Connectivity

As of February 2022, Karratha and Dampier have patchy 4G signal from Telstra, extending east to Port Hedland but with no coverage west or south. There is no signal from other carriers. 5G has not reached the Pilbara region. Visitors should plan accordingly for remote stretches of travel.

Safety

The main safety concern is extreme summer heat—temperatures can feel like 48°C during the day, creating risk of heat exhaustion and dehydration. Avoid outdoor activity during midday hours in summer. The FIFO (fly-in, fly-out) mining workforce means Karratha has a transient population with associated social dynamics. The town is generally safe but standard urban precautions apply. Remote areas require preparation: carry water, tell someone your plans, and ensure your vehicle is reliable. The Burrup Peninsula has industrial areas—respect safety barriers and warnings at the North West Shelf facility.

Go next

West along the coast, Exmouth and Coral Bay offer world-class diving and snorkelling on the UNESCO-listed Ningaloo Reef. East, Port Hedland is a dusty industrial port shipping iron ore, but turtles nest on its beaches. The North West Coastal Highway continues east from Karratha through Port Hedland to Broome, while the Great Northern Highway provides an inland route via Mount Magnet and Newman. The Montebello Islands are accessible by boat from Dampier for extended diving trips.
