Overview

Karesuando is the northernmost official border crossing between Finland and Sweden, a remote village of about 350 people where two countries meet at the Muonio river. It's famous as the birthplace of Laestadianism, the largest Christian revival movement in the Nordic countries, founded by vicar Lars Levi Laestadius who served here 1826–1849.

Culture

Laestadianism originated here; the movement still strongly influences local culture. Respect the religious character of the community, especially near the church.

Packing

Bring everything you need—supplies are very limited. Even in summer, rain gear and warm layers are essential. Winter visitors need full cold-weather gear.
