Overview

Karamea is a remote settlement of roughly 650 residents at the northern end of New Zealand's West Coast. The town sits on a narrow coastal strip with Kahurangi National Park completely encircling it to the south, east, and north.

Accommodation

Book ahead in summer peak season (Dec-Feb) when tramping is popular. The Last Resort has dorms from $37 and private rooms; Wangapeka Backpackers offers camping from $10.

Activities

Both Heaphy and Wangapeka Tracks require multi-day tramping with hut or tent bookings. Cave tours must be arranged in advance as they are guided only.

Food

Four Square Supermarket is the only grocery option, open daily except Sunday afternoons. Vinnie's Cafe and hotel restaurants cover cafe and restaurant meals.

Transport

Golden Bay Air provides the main air link between Karamea Aerodrome and Nelson. There is no bus service; visitors need their own vehicle or a flight.
