Why go?
Karakol is a mountain town on the east side of Issyk Kul, serving as the gateway to Kyrgyzstan's best trekking, mountaineering, and skiing. The town has a unique Tsarist-era character with traditional Russian wooden houses and one of Central Asia's few remaining Slavic populations. Unlike busier Central Asian capitals, Karakol offers a slower pace with access to Ala-Kul glacier lake, Altyn Arashan hot springs, and the highest ski resort in Central Asia at 3,040 m. It attracts hikers, trekkers, and nature lovers seeking outdoor adventures without the crowds.
Get in
Karakol is accessible by bus and marshrutka from Bishkek (330 som, 5-6 hours), with departures at 20:00 and 21:00 arriving around 05:30-06:00. Choose between the southern shore route (station southeast of center) or northern shore route (from bazaar) of Issyk Kul. The South Bus Station serves destinations along the southern shore including Bokonbayev, Balykchy, and Kochkor. The Northern Bus Station handles routes along the northern shore including Cholpon-Ata and Balykchy. Tamchy Airport (2.5-3 hours away) has limited summer air service from Bishkek, Almaty, Tashkent, and Novosibirsk.
