Overview

Kabah is one of the most impressive Maya archaeological sites on the Ruta Puuc, a designated tourist circuit through Yucatán's hill country. The site's star attraction is Codz Poop (Palace of the Masks), a temple so thoroughly covered in carved stone masks of the rain god Chaac that its original architectural lines are nearly invisible.

Before you go

Connectivity

Mobile coverage is available but may be spotty at the ruins themselves. WiFi is limited to nearby towns like Santa Elena and will not be available at the archaeological zone.

Money

Bring Mexican pesos (M$) for admission and purchases. Santa Elena has small shops and loncherias; larger purchases may require bank machines in regional towns.

Packing

Essentials: sturdy walking shoes, hat, sunblock, mosquito repellant, and at least 1.5 liters of water per person. Camera with extra batteries.

Transport

MEX-261 highway passes through Kabah. Rent a car in Mérida for maximum flexibility, or join an organized tour. Local collectivos connect Santa Elena to other regional towns.

Weather

Visit during the dry season (November to April) for comfortable temperatures. Summers are hot and humid with afternoon rain. Early morning visits avoid crowds and midday heat.
