Overview
Ciudad Juárez offers a glimpse into northern Mexican culture far removed from beach resorts and Aztec ruins. Named for Benito Juárez, Mexico's first indigenous president, the city embodies the vaquero (cowboy) tradition with a distinctly rugged frontier atmosphere.

Before you go
Connectivity
Major Mexican carriers (Telcel, Movistar, AT&T Mexico) provide good coverage. SIM cards are inexpensive. WiFi is available at hotels and some cafes. US mobile plans may work but roaming charges apply.
Money
US dollars are widely accepted near the border, but Mexican pesos (M$) are preferred inland. ATMs are plentiful from US banks. Most larger businesses accept cards, though street vendors and markets require cash. Haggling is expected at markets.
Safety
Juárez has significant violent crime rates. Stay in groups, avoid poorly lit areas at night, and consider basing in El Paso. If stopped by police, federal officers are more trustworthy than municipal police. Keep emergency contacts handy.
Transport
Public buses are functional but confusing for tourists. Taxis are cheap but unmetered—negotiate fares in advance. Walking is safe in the historic center near the border. Driving requires Mexican auto insurance by law.
Weather
Summers reach 35°C+ with occasional monsoon rains. Winters are mild (13-16°C) with little rain. Spring and fall offer the most comfortable conditions for sightseeing.
