Overview
Jinghong is China's southernmost gateway to Southeast Asia, sitting at the edge of Xishuangbanna where Yunnan meets Laos. Despite being in China, the city feels more like Chiang Mai or Luang Prabang — Theravada Buddhist temples, Dai language, tropical climate, and the mighty Mekong flowing through.

Before you go
Culture
Xishuangbanna is China's most Thai-Lao region — most locals are Theravada Buddhists speaking Dai language related to Thai and Lao. Dress modestly at temples (cover shoulders and knees).
Money
Bank of China ATM near bus terminal operates 24/7. Mobile payment (WeChat Pay, Alipay) is ubiquitous. Cash still needed for night market stalls and small vendors. Chinese yuan (¥) is the local currency.
Safety
Mushroom food poisoning is a real risk — confirm edibility with staff. Use registered taxis via apps rather than street hailing. Keep valuables secure at bus stations and night markets.
Transport
Xishuangbanna Railway Station has 20+ daily trains from Kunming (3-4 hours). Long-distance bus station is south of center. For Laos, direct buses to Luang Namtha leave from the northern bus station at 10:40.
Weather
Tropical climate year-round. Coolest (and best) months are November-February (13-23°C). Hot season March-May. Rainy season June-October brings daily downpours but lower prices.
