Overview
Jimma is the largest city in southwestern Ethiopia, historically known as a major trading center where diverse ethnic groups gathered to exchange coffee, perfume, and other goods. The city served as the capital of the Jimma Kingdom, and its Aba Jifar Palace remains a testament to that legacy.

Culture
Islam is the predominant religion (followed by Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity and Protestantism). Dress modestly, especially when visiting religious sites. The Oromo (80%) and Amhara (17%) are the main ethnic groups.
Money
Ethiopian Birr (ETB) is the local currency. ATMs and card payments are limited outside major hotels, so carry enough cash for your stay. Thursday market day is the busiest time in town.
Transport
Bajajs (three-wheeled vehicles) and line taxis (mini-vans) are the primary local transport within Jimma. Bajajs are cheapest for short trips around the city.
Weather
Jimma has a long wet season from mid-March to mid-October with frequent cloud cover. November to February is the dry, more comfortable time to visit with average temperatures of 17-29°C.
