Jiaxing is a historic city in Zhejiang province with 1.5 million people in its urban area. The city is less than an hour by train from Shanghai, making it a popular day trip destination.

Food
Jiaxing is famous for zongzi (lotus leaf rice dumplings). Wu Fang Zhai is the iconic local brand. Fresh siomai (¥20-25) and Bridge Head Fan Pot (¥20-30) are local specialties.
Language
Local Wu dialect (similar to Shanghainese) is spoken. Mandarin is widely understood. English is limited outside tourist hotels. Write destinations in Chinese characters for taxis.
Money
Chinese Yuan (CNY) accepted everywhere. WeChat Pay and Alipay dominate. Bring some cash for small vendors and wet markets. ATMs available at banks near stations and shopping centers.
Safety
Generally safe. Avoid construction areas around St Mary's Church. Watch belongings on crowded weekend transport. Red Boat may have extra security at times of political sensitivity.
Transport
Jiaxing Railway Station has direct trains from Shanghai South (45-60 min) and Hangzhou. Jiaxing South handles high-speed rail. Local bus and tram connect stations to city center. South Lake ferry (¥60) visits all lake attractions.
Weather
Summer is hot and humid (32°C+). Winter is cold and dry (8-11°C). Spring and autumn are most comfortable for sightseeing. Dragon Boat Festival occurs on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month.
