Overview
Ji'an is a rare window into one of the world's most isolated nations. Sitting on the Yalu River opposite North Korea's Manpo, this small Chinese city preserves the ancient capital of the Goguryeo Kingdom (37 BCE-668 CE), now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Food
Korean hot pot, grilled meat, and stone pot bibimbap are local specialties. Elm bark cold noodles popular in summer. Rice wine about ¥25 for 2.5L.
Safety
Generally safe border city. Evening riverside walks are quiet but not isolated. Standard border area precautions apply.
Transport
Buses from Tonghua every 40 min, 2 hr journey, ¥35. Train connections to Tonghua and Shenyang. Local buses cover main sites but with low frequency.
Weather
Best visited mid-September to mid-October for autumn foliage. Summers are hot and humid with unpredictable rain. Winters are bitter cold with freezing rivers.
