Before you go
Culture
Izhevsk was closed to foreigners until the 1990s. Locals may be curious about visitors. Dress modestly when visiting churches. Tipping 10% at restaurants is customary but not obligatory.
Language
Russian is the primary language. English is limited outside major hotels. Udmurt, a Finno-Ugric language, is also spoken by the local population. Learning basic Russian phrases will significantly improve interactions.
Money
Russia uses the Russian Ruble (RUB). ATMs are available throughout Izhevsk. Credit cards are accepted at larger hotels and restaurants but carry cash for markets and smaller establishments.
Safety
Izhevsk is a standard industrial Russian city. Use normal urban precautions—watch belongings in crowded areas and avoid walking alone in poorly lit areas at night.
Transport
Public transport runs throughout the city. Marshrutkas (minibuses) follow fixed routes and are an affordable way to get around. Taxis are inexpensive by Western standards.
Weather
Winters are severe with temperatures dropping to -15°C in January. Summers are mild and pleasant, reaching 25°C in July-August. Pack accordingly for the season of your visit.
