Overview
Inhambane is a sleepy historic town of 80,000 people (2017) situated 485 km north of Maputo on a peninsula overlooking a bay. Considered one of the prettiest towns in Mozambique, it offers Portuguese colonial architecture in a low-key, unpretentious setting.

Before you go
Culture
Beach resorts are culturally isolating with predominantly white South African and European guests. Town-based stays offer more authentic local interaction.
Money
ATMs may be limited in Inhambane; carrying sufficient cash from larger cities like Maputo is advisable. Some prices quoted in South African Rand (R) at resorts catering to that market.
Safety
Exercise caution when purchasing weighed items from beach vendors—scales may be tampered with. Standard urban precautions apply in the town.
Transport
Direct flights from Maputo and Johannesburg operate several times weekly via LAM. A reasonably good road connects to Tofo beach 30 km east. Resorts south require travel on dirt and sand roads.
