Overview

Imperatriz is the second largest city in Maranhão state with roughly 260,000 inhabitants, serving as the economic and cultural hub that binds southwest Maranhão, north Tocantins, and south Pará. Known as the "Gateway of the Amazon" and "Capital of Energy," it offers a window into a distant Brazil away from major tourist circuits.

Food

Panelada (offal stew) is sold 24 hours at Quatro Bocas on Avenida Bernardo Sayão, with biggest crowds late at night. Regional dishes include baião de Dois, pequi dishes, and local fish.

Safety

The highway towards Belém is unsafe at night. Use caution when traveling after dark on roads leaving Imperatriz.

Transport

The airport has LATAM and Azul flights to Belém and Brasília. Bus connections exist but highways can be unsafe at night. A train stops at Açailândia, 80 km north.

Weather

Tropical savanna climate with dramatic daily temperature swings. Temperatures can range from 13°C to over 40°C in a single day. Locals say "wait five minutes and the weather will change."
