Overview
Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park is the quintessential South Australian Outback experience, best known for its iconic Wilpena Pound, a large naturally formed amphitheatre. The park also contains significant paleontological sites, hiking trails, and lookouts.

Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park is the quintessential South Australian Outback experience, best known for its iconic Wilpena Pound, a large naturally formed amphitheatre. The park also contains significant paleontological sites, hiking trails, and lookouts. Since April 2021, it has been on the tentative list for World Heritage for its rich fossil collection, along with Vulkathunha-Gammon Ranges and Nilpena Ediacara National Parks.

Climate
The park experiences hot summers (up to 45°C) and cold winters. Some trails are closed from November 30 to March 1 due to heat. The ideal times to visit are autumn (mid-March to May) and spring (late August to late November), when temperatures are moderate.

Get in
The park is best accessed by car, with a drive of over four hours from Adelaide. The only airport, at Hawker, is used solely by the Royal Flying Doctor Service. The main entry is via Flinders Ranges Way.

Fees and permits
A vehicle entry fee is required, payable online via the SA Parks website or by email. As of 2022, the fee is $12 per vehicle, $10 for concession holders. Camping requires an additional fee. Passes can also be purchased at SA Parks booking offices.

When to go
Autumn (March–May) and spring (late August–November) are ideal, with mild temperatures and clear skies. Summer can exceed 45°C and many trails are closed from December to March. Winter nights are cold but days are pleasant for hiking. Check for fire bans before visiting.

Get around
The main sealed road is Flinders Ranges Way, with 110 km/h speed limits that drop to 45-55 km/h on bends. The road to Wilpena Pound Resort is also sealed. Scenic drives are on gravel roads with a default speed limit of 40 km/h. Roads can close without notice due to fire danger.

Things to do
Highlights include viewing the natural amphitheatre of Wilpena Pound, hiking to St Mary Peak (1,189 m), exploring the 6,000-year-old rock art at Arkaroo Rock, and visiting the Ediacaran Golden Spike – the only golden spike in the southern hemisphere. Numerous lookouts such as Brachina, Hucks, Rawnsley, Razorback, Stokes Hill, and Wangara offer panoramic views. Scenic drives include Brachina Gorge and Bunyeroo Valley.

Where to stay
Accommodation ranges from the mid-range Wilpena Pound Resort and the upmarket Ikara Safari Camp to numerous basic campgrounds: Acraman (4 sites), Aroona (13 unpowered sites), Brachina East, Cambrian, Dingley Dell, Koolamon, Teamsters, Trezona, and Youngoona. All campgrounds are unpowered and require self-sufficiency. Stargazing is excellent, especially away from the resort lights.

Food and drink
The only restaurant in the park is the Wilpena Pound Resort Dining Room, serving Australian cuisine including bush tucker, open for breakfast and dinner. There's also a cafe at the IGA Xpress and the Ikara Lounge bar and bistro, both at the resort.

Shopping
The only store in the park is the Wilpena Pound IGA Xpress, open 8AM–6PM, selling groceries, meat, fruit, vegetables, liquor, and fuel. It's the only place to fill up your vehicle within the park.

Stay safe
Roads are winding with wildlife crossings; speed limits can drop abruptly from 110 km/h to 40 km/h. Mobile reception is poor: only Telstra has coverage at Wilpena and some lookouts; Optus and Vodafone have none. For emergencies, contact SA Parks regional duty officer at +61 408 378 284.

A small campground with only four campsites in it. It is convenient for those wanting to explore Bunyeroo Gorge. Suitable for tents and camper trailers and includes toilets.

Aroona Campground
A medium sized campground with 13 campsites which includes toilets but all the campsites are unpowered. However, it is a reasonable distance from other campsites and the Wilpena Pound Resort, so you will need to be self-sufficient.
