Overview
Iguala is famous as the birthplace of Mexico's national flag, where José Magdaleno Ocampo crafted the Flag of the Three Guarantees in 1821 after independence from Spain. The city is nicknamed "la Ciudad Tamarindera" (Tamarind City) for the tamarind trees surrounding its downtown cathedral.
