Before you go
Culture
Hunchun is in Yanbian, China's ethnic Korean autonomous region. Korean language and culture are prominent alongside Chinese. Russian influence is also visible given proximity to both borders.
Safety
Border areas are extremely sensitive. Do not approach the North Korean border closely, even if you believe yourself to be on Chinese territory. The 2009 kidnapping incident demonstrates real risks.
Transport
Hunchun Railway Station on Zhanqian West Street is the main transport hub. Sign posts in trilingual Chinese-Russian-Korean aid navigation.
