Overview
Hovd (Khovd) is a small but culturally rich aimag center in western Mongolia with around 30,000 residents. Its unique appeal lies in extraordinary ethnic diversity—Kazakhs and seven different Mongolian ethnic groups—each with distinct dialects, clothing, dances, and musical instruments.

Culture
Hovd is unique for its 8+ ethnic groups including Kazakhs and seven Mongolian groups. Each has distinct traditions, costumes, dances, and the Uriankhai are known for unique archery using rubber-tipped arrows at leather balls.
Food
Limited dining options with similar menus. Try suutai tsae (salty milk tea) with meals. Erka Egchiin Guanz inside the market serves good dumplings. In summer, try airag (fermented mare's milk) from local herders.
Money
Most banks change dollars to togrog. Euros can be difficult to exchange; Khaan Bank near Tushig Hotel may help. ATMs work with Visa but not Mastercard. Western Union transfers are not working.
Transport
Hovd Airport has flights to Ulaanbaatar via Hunnu Airlines (~$280 round-trip for foreigners). Shared vans to Ölgii and Ulaangom depart regularly for 25,000 ₮. Town is walkable; taxis available for outlying attractions.
Weather
Summers are warm (25-26 °C July-August) ideal for outdoor activities. Winters are severe (-27 °C January). Spring and autumn are transitional. Summer brings traditional fermented drinks.
