Overview

Horeke is the oldest European settlement in the Hokianga and the second oldest in all of New Zealand, founded as 'Deptford' and later renamed for a Maori term meaning 'the throwing of a spear'. It was the first centre of timber trading in the region, and today visitors can walk between historic buildings on stilts over the harbour, a plaque marking the first commercial ship-building yard in New Zealand, and Ruapapaka Island where the country's first legal execution took place in 1838.
