Why go?

Höfn (pronounced "herpn") sits at the southeastern corner of Iceland, right in the shadow of Vatnajökull, Europe's largest glacier. The town of around 2,000 people is famous for its lobster (humar), with the annual Höfn Icelandic Lobster Festival held in late June or early July. Unlike the busier south coast towns, Höfn offers a quieter base for glacier hiking, Jökulsárlón lagoon tours, and exploring the remote Hornafjörður lagoon—a 40 km² blend of Atlantic and glacial water.

Getting in

Most visitors arrive by the Ring Road (Route 1), which connects Höfn to Reykjavík (460 km west) and Egilsstaðir (100 km east). Eagle Air flies from Reykjavík to Hornafjörður Airport (HFJ), though schedules are limited. Driving times: Reykjavík about 6-7 hours, Kirkjubæjarklaustur about 2.5 hours west, Djúpivogur about 1 hour east. The area was one of Iceland's most isolated until road improvements in recent decades.

Getting around

Höfn is compact—less than 1 km across—so the town center is walkable. However, reaching day-trip destinations like Jökulsárlón (60 km away) or Vatnajökull trailheads requires a vehicle. Car rental is available, or you can join organized tours from operators like Vatnajokull Travel. The N1 gas station on Hafnarbraut is a key reference point for both transport and supplies.

When to go

Summer (May-September) offers the best access to glacier hikes, boat tours, and extended daylight hours (midnight sun in June-July). Humarhöfnin restaurant is officially open only in summer. Winter brings northern lights, lower accommodation rates (Hótel Höfn drops to 17,000-20,000 kr from 29,000-37,000 kr), and fewer crowds, though some tour operators and attractions have limited availability. The Höfn Lobster Festival in late June is the busiest time.

Where to stay

Budget options include Höfn Hostel (dorms from 4,000 kr, open all year, 15-minute walk northwest of center) and Guesthouse Hvammur (8,000 kr shared bathroom by the harbor, or more upscale rooms near N1 gas station). Mid-range guesthouses include Brunnhóll (16,000-23,000 kr, working farm 30 km west) and Guesthouse Hali (12,000 kr double, 13 km east of Jökulsárlón). Hótel Höfn in the Víkurbraut building offers the most central hotel option with lagoon views.

Food and drink

Höfn is Iceland's lobster capital—look for humar (langoustine) at Humarhöfnin (Hafnarbraut 4, next to the harbor and youth hostel), a slightly upscale restaurant in a historic building. Kaffi Hornið (Hafnarbraut 42, 11:30-22:00) offers cozy pub-style soups, sandwiches, and pasta at fair prices. For quick bites, Hafnarbúðin (Ránarslóð 2) serves burgers and subs as a drive-through. Ósinn restaurant in the Hótel Höfn building specializes in local food at higher prices.

Things to do

Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon (60 km west of Höfn) offers 30-40 minute boat tours among floating icebergs—Höfn is the closest town for day trips. Glacier tour operators include Glacierjeeps (jeep tours to Skálfellsjökull icefall) and From Coast to Mountain/Öræfaferðir (ice climbing, kayaking, bird watching from Hofsnes farm). In town, visit the Gamlabúð Folk Museum (Víkurbraut, 1850-1950 era) and the Hornafjörður Art Museum (Hafnarbraut 27). Geology enthusiasts should seek out Huldusteinn rock collection (Hafnarbraut 11, 14:00-21:00) in the old swimming pool. The town swimming pool (Sundlaug, Víkurbraut 9) is impressive for its size.

Safety

The area's remoteness means medical facilities are limited—serious emergencies may require evacuation to Reykjavík. Weather changes rapidly; Vatnajökull's conditions can be extreme even in summer. Tell someone your plans before glacier excursions. The lagoon is shallow but navigable by large ships—don't attempt swimming. Roads can be icy in winter; check weather conditions before driving. Crime is low, but lock vehicles and accommodation as a precaution.

Shopping

The arts and crafts scene is active in Höfn. Handraðinn (Víkurbraut, by the N1 gas station) is a local crafts center open May-September daily 09:00-18:00, and Friday-Saturday only in winter. Several artists have workshops and galleries in Mikligarður, an old building by the harbor. For day-to-day needs, there's a mini-mall in the town center on Hafnarbraut.

Go next

Djúpivogur lies 100 km east along the Ring Road—your next stop if continuing toward East Fjords and Egilsstaðir. Kirkjubæjarklaustur is 200 km west toward the south coast, with stops at Skeiðarársandur and the Öræfajökull volcano. Jökulsárlón lagoon and the turnoff to Vatnajökull National Park's western entrances are about 60 km west. Well-prepared adventurers can attempt a Vatnajökull glacier crossing to East Iceland or the Interior, though this is genuinely dangerous.
