Before you go
Money
No fees for hiking, camping, or parking. Shop for food in Kuhmo, Sotkamo, Valtimo, or Nurmes before entering the park. Finland uses euros (€).
Packing
Pack all food and water treatment supplies. Rubber boots, head netting against gnats, and first aid kit are essential. No supplies available in park.
Safety
Cliffs are slippery; mobile coverage is unreliable. Bring first aid kit and tell someone your plans. Gnat season (mid-summer) requires head netting.
Transport
No public transport reaches the park. Drive to Palolampi (main entrance) or Iso-Valkeinen (from road 75). Taxis from Kuhmo or Sotkamo work for 20–50 km trips.
Weather
Rubber boots essential for mire areas year-round. Winter access requires skis or snowshoes. Summer days are long but midges swarm in July.
