Overview

Heyuan is a mid-sized city in Northern Guangdong best known for its extraordinary collection of dinosaur eggs — over 17,000 specimens, the largest in the world. Beyond fossils, the city preserves Hakka cultural traditions, produces notable teas and citrus, and sits near three scenic mountains and Wanlü Lake.

Culture

Heyuan blends Cantonese and Hakka cultures. Local specialties include beef, lotus root, pomelo, bamboo crafts, and Hakka rice wine. The region produces notable white and oolong teas.

Language

Cantonese and Hakka are the primary dialects. Mandarin is widely understood for communication with outsiders.

Prices are quoted in Chinese yuan (CNY). The Heyuan Dinosaur Museum costs ¥30 for adults. Wanlü Lake charges ¥192 (entrance plus boat tour). Budget accommodation starts around ¥150–200 per night.

Transport

Heyuan East Railway Station serves the Jinggang high-speed rail line. Two bus stations (Heyuan Bus Station and Heyuan Xincheng Bus Station) connect to neighboring cities via expressways.

Weather

Subtropical climate with hot summers (peak rainfall in June at ~400 mm) and mild winters (January average 9.5°C). Spring and autumn are most comfortable for sightseeing.
