Why go?

Hazyview is a small Lowveld town of 4,000 people serving as the primary gateway to Kruger National Park's southern gates. Its name comes from the shimmering haze during summer heat, and the area is known for large banana and macadamia nut industries. Most of Mpumalanga's private game reserves lie just east of town, making it an ideal base for safari adventures, while the nearby Panorama Route offers scenic mountain drives. The town has a more relaxed, rural feel compared to larger South African cities.

Get in

Drive along the N4 highway from Johannesburg (approximately 350 km, 4-5 hours) or from Mozambique until reaching Mbombela, then continue 60 km north on the R40 towards Witrivier and Hazyview. City Bug bus service operates to the town for those without private transport. The main road connecting Bosbokrand with Witrivier passes through Hazyview's center.

When to go

The area can be visited year-round, though wildlife viewing is best during the dry winter months (May-September) when animals congregate around water sources. Summer (October-April) brings lush scenery and excellent birdwatching but also heat and occasional rain. The town serves as a stop on the Panorama Route, which is particularly scenic during autumn foliage changes.
