Overview
Havelock is the green-shell mussel capital of the world and serves as the major gateway to the Pelorus Sound, one of the two major sounds of the Marlborough Sounds. The town has an unexpected scientific claim to fame: Sir Ernest Rutherford, the first man to split the atom, and rocket scientist William Pickering both had their formative education here.
