Overview
Hateruma is Japan's southernmost populated island, a remote gem in the Yaeyama archipelago where turquoise waters meet coral reefs and the night sky glows with Southern Cross visibility from December to June. The island offers a counterpoint to Ishigaki's tourist infrastructure: no convenience stores, no traffic lights, and a tight-knit community of about 570 residents who produce the famous Awanami awamori.
