Why Go
Haiphong is Vietnam's third largest city and the largest city at the Red River delta, historically significant as a population center and ancient port. The city served as an opium trading hub from upriver warlords in Yunnan and general shipping port during French colonial rule. It functions as a practical transit hub between Hanoi and northern coastal destinations like Cat Ba Island and Ha Long Bay, offering a more relaxed alternative to the capital without the tourist crowds.

Getting In
Cat Bi International Airport south of the city serves domestic flights and some international routes from Bangkok and Seoul via Jetstar, VietJetAir, and Vietnam Airlines. The Hai Phong railway station at 75 Lương Khánh Thiện connects to Long Bien station in Hanoi with four trains daily; the 2.5+ hour journey costs around 150,000 dong for an air-conditioned soft seat. Ferries depart from Ben Binh St port to Cat Ba Island (up to 100,000 dong).

Safety
Haiphong has a known reputation for gang activity and transnational organized crime, historically linked to French networks supplying the American mafia. Studies indicate around 4,000-10,000 injectable drug users in the city. Taxi reliability varies by district. Crime rates may be lower overall, but attackers can be persistent and confident. Avoid poorly lit areas at night and exercise caution with unlicensed taxis.
