Why go?
Győr sits in the "Golden Triangle" between Vienna (1.5 hours), Bratislava (1 hour), and Budapest (1h 15min by train—Hungary's fastest rail link), making it a natural stop for backpackers crossing Central Europe. The old city is compact and pedestrian-friendly, packed with 18th-century baroque palaces, churches, and statues around Széchenyi tér. Locals call it "A barokk városa" (the Baroque City) and "A vízek városa" (City of Waters) because the Rába, Rábca, Mosoni-Duna, and Marcal rivers converge here. For budget travelers, two-course lunch menus start at Ft 750, ATMs are everywhere, and euros are accepted at wronger rates minus five percent.

Get in
There has been no border control between Austria, Slovakia and Hungary since January 1, 2008, so crossing these borders is continuous. Győr Railway Station (Vasútállomás) on Révai Miklós utca has fast InterCity and RailJet trains to Budapest (1h 15min, the fastest in Hungary) and 8 daily direct trains from Vienna (1.5 hours). From Bratislava you must change at least once. Luggage lockers cost Ft 400/600 per 24 hours for small/big. The Bus Station (Autóbuszállomás) at Hunyadi utca 9-11 serves buses from Budapest's Nepliget nearly every hour, plus daily connections to Vienna (07:00 depart, 14:00 or 15:00 return, 2+ hours, Ft 3,900/5,900). International routes include Prague (Ft 6,000/11,000), Rotterdam (Ft 19,900/36,900), and Varna (Ft 16,900/30,900).

Get around
The city centre is entirely walkable—most streets are pedestrianized, including the main Széchenyi tér and Baross Gábor street with its cafes and boutiques. Kisalföld Volán operates the local bus network (www.kisalfoldvolan.hu). OTP ATMs work 24 hours at Révai Miklós utca 8 (near the railway station) and inside the bus station. Euro payments are accepted for train tickets but change comes in forints, and no bill larger than €50 should be offered.

When to go
The city looks best in spring (April-June) and early autumn (September-October) when temperatures are mild and hotel prices lower than peak summer. July and August see student hostels converted to summer accommodations, and many restaurants open outdoor terraces. During main Christian holidays, holiday markets fill the squares along Baross Gábor and Arany János streets. Winter (November-February) is quiet with shorter museum hours but hotel rates drop significantly.
