Gyantse is the fourth largest city in Tibet and offers a more relaxed alternative to Lhasa for experiencing Tibetan culture. The city was historically a major trade center with India and became famous as a 1904 battlefield during the British Younghusband invasion.

Gyantse is renowned for traditional Tibetan carpets. Local markets also sell yak products. The Muslim community serves as primary traders in the bazaar.
Transport
Buses connect Gyantse to Xigatse and Lhasa regularly. Most foreign visitors require organized tours and Tibet travel permits. Local transport includes taxis, horse carriages, and bicycle rentals (~¥25/day).
