Overview

Guaymas is Sonora's principal port city, a working town with a shrimp fleet and industrial zone that serves as a gateway to the beaches of nearby San Carlos. The city has a pleasant malecón (harborfront walkway) built around 2006, a historic zócalo with a kiosk designed by Gustave Eiffel, and is renowned throughout the state for its excellent fresh seafood.

Food

Guaymas is renowned for fresh seafood throughout Sonora. Local specialties include shrimp and fish from the Sea of Cortés. Supermarkets include Walmart and Sam's Club.

Language

Spanish is the primary language. English is commonly spoken in service industries due to the nearby San Carlos expat community.

Safety

Exercise caution near bus station areas. The city has seen violent incidents involving police since 2018. Normal urban precautions apply in central tourist areas.

Transport

City buses cost M$5 per trip. Taxis to San Carlos (10 km) run M$12 from the central market. Domestic flights available at Guaymas International Airport, 6 km north.

Weather

Hot, dry climate with summer highs reaching 50°C. Best visiting season is October through April when temperatures average 31°C max. Ocean water is warmest (30°C) June-October.
