Guanzihling is one of only three places in the world with muddy hot springs, alongside Kagoshima, Japan and Vulcano, Italy. The dark, mineral-rich mud reputedly treats skin allergies and offers a uniquely therapeutic experience.

Guanzihling means 'Pass to the Ridge' in Mandarin. Alternative spellings include Guanziling, Kuantzuling, and Kuantzeling. The Chinese characters were historically written as 關仔嶺.

Cash is essential at hot spring resorts and local restaurants. No English signage or English-speaking staff—bring a Mandarin phrasebook or translation app.

Bring a swimsuit for hot spring access, flip-flops for pool areas, and cash. No English signs or staff—carry the Chinese name 水火同源 for Fire and Water attraction.
Safety
Hot spring temperatures reach 43.5°C—test with a toe before immersing. The Fire and Water methane flames have burned for 300+ years; observe from a safe distance.
Transport
Hourly buses from Chiayi TRA station cost NT$79 (1 hr). From Tainan, take local TRA to Houbi, then taxi (~NT$600). Taxis are scarce in the area—get your driver's contact before departing.
