Gros Islet is the newest town in Saint Lucia, promoted from village status and sitting at the far northern end of the island. It offers a more laid-back alternative to the capital Castries while remaining accessible to larger resorts and Rodney Bay Marina.

Reduit Beach is the most popular west coast beach, 30-minute walk south. East coast beaches offer kite surfing and seclusion.

Local currency is Eastern Caribbean Dollar (EC$), tied to US$2.70. Many prices listed in US$ at resorts. ATMs available in Rodney Bay area.
Nightlife
The famous Friday night "Jump-up" street party closes Gros Islet streets to cars, with bars open late and street food vendors.
Safety
General safety is good. Atlantic coast beaches have strong winds and currents. Some roads require 4WD to access remote beaches.
Transport
Local bus 1A runs every few minutes between Gros Islet and Castries for EC$1.50-2.50. Taxis are plentiful with EC$25 to Rodney Bay or EC$60 to Castries.
