Overview

Great Barrier Island (Māori: Aotea) is a remote 285 km² island in the outer Hauraki Gulf, 90 km northeast of Auckland. With a population under 1,000, it offers pristine natural environments: regenerating kauri forest, rare native wildlife (kākā, brown teal, black petrel), spectacular surf beaches and an International Dark Sky Sanctuary designation.

Accommodation

Medlands Beach Backpackers offers dorms from $50; DoC campsites available at Medlands and Akapoua Bay. Book ahead in summer.

Connectivity

Free Wi-Fi at Barrier Social Club, Claris Airport and library. Mobile coverage (Vodafone/Spark) limited to Claris, Tryphena, Port FitzRoy, Okiwi and parts of Okupu.

Food

Groceries cost 20-40% more than mainland NZ. Stonewall Store in Tryphena is largest; Claris Store is handy for the airport area.

Money

Use NZD. Most places accept cards but mobile coverage is limited—carry some cash for smaller establishments and rural areas.

Packing

Bring everything you need—limited shops on island. Cash, good walking boots, cleaned hiking boots (for kauri dieback), and torch for dark sky viewing.

Safety

Kauri dieback disease is present—always clean boots before/after forest walks. Hot springs can be very hot. No bins—bring rubbish bags.

Transport

No public transport exists; rent a car (from $50/day) or use shuttle services. Book shuttles before arrival, especially in summer.
