Overview
Grand Popo is a small coastal town at the mouth of the Mono River where it meets the Atlantic Ocean. It offers a quieter alternative to busier West African beach destinations, with traditional villages like Hounkounnou and Gbècon, expansive mangroves, and the chance to see traditional salt fabrication on Île du Sel.

Before you go
Connectivity
Mobile network coverage exists but is limited in rural areas around Grand Popo. Arrange any connectivity needs before leaving Cotonou.
Money
CFA franc (XOF) is the local currency. Cash is preferred for small purchases and zem rides. ATMs are likely in larger nearby towns but come prepared with sufficient cash.
Safety
Strong ocean currents make swimming dangerous—swim at your own risk. Avoid roadside touts offering guide services; use hotel-recommended guides instead.
Transport
Zem (motorcycle taxis) cost a few hundred CFA for local trips. Walk to most restaurants and hotels along the main road. Tours arranged through hotels use pirogues or motorboats.
Weather
Coastal Benin has a tropical climate with a wet season from April to October. The best time to visit is during the dry season from November to March.
