Overview

The Giant Mountains (Krkonoše/Karkonosze) straddle the Czech-Polish border and offer a rare blend of accessible wilderness 40 km long and 20 km wide. Unlike the Alps, the landscape resembles Scottish or Scandinavian moors—rolling ridges without tall cliffs—making it ideal for hikers who want dramatic views without technical climbing.

Before you go

Fees

No fees for Czech Giant Mountains National Park. Walking off marked trails is forbidden. Cars are banned from most areas. Neighboring Polish Karkonosze National Park charges fees—except along the crest trail.

Language

German is more useful than English here due to historic German population and strong German tourism. Some mountain hut websites exist only in Czech and German. Finding English speakers is possible but not guaranteed.

Money

Czech Koruna (Kč) is the local currency. Supermarkets in mountain towns have slightly inflated prices compared to Prague. Cash is useful in mountain huts, though some accept cards.

Safety

No emergency huts exist on the crest trail. Tell someone your plans before hiking alone. Avalanches occur in spring. Darkness comes early in autumn—plan descents accordingly.

Transport

Local buses follow Route No. 1 (red) twice daily—morning and afternoon. Check IDOS timetable for schedules. Last buses depart late afternoon; after that, hitchhiking or staying overnight are your only options.

Weather

Mountain weather is Scandinavian—snow possible late September through May. Summer temperatures on Sněžka average 8.3°C; always bring layers. Storms develop quickly on exposed ridges.
