George is the sixth oldest town in South Africa and serves as the main gateway to the beautiful Garden Route. Cradled by the Outeniqua Mountains to the north and the Indian Ocean to the south, this town of around 200,000 people retains a small-town character while offering sophisticated infrastructure.

Safety

Permanent and temporary speed cameras are prevalent. The Kaaimans River Pass between George and Knysna is dangerous at high speeds, especially when wet—speed limit is 60 km/h.

Transport

Car is the preferred way to get around George and the Garden Route. Minivan taxis from Thembalethu rank go to Mossel Bay (R35), Knysna (R50), and Oudtshoorn (R40).
