Why Go
Knysna sits between George and Plettenberg Bay along the scenic Garden Route, offering a Mediterranean maritime climate with year-round rainfall that keeps the region perpetually green. The town is framed by indigenous forests extending into Tsitsikamma National Park and protected by the massive sandstone Heads that guard the lagoon from the Indian Ocean. Known as the culinary capital of South Africa for its oysters and seafood, Knysna also serves as an art and craft hotspot with adventure activities including tree canopy gliding, kloofing, and abseiling. The lagoon covers about 18 km² and hosts at least 200 species of fish.

Getting Around
Walking is the best way to explore central Knysna, with the waterfront and Main Street easily navigable on foot. Bicycle rental is available for longer distances. Public transport is limited—except for minibuses, taxis are the primary option for reaching areas beyond walking distance. Traffic can become extremely congested during the high tourist season, with long queues common on roads in and out of town.

See
The Knysna lagoon, covering about 18 km² with at least 200 species of fish, connects to the Indian Ocean through a turbulent channel between the Heads—two imposing sandstone cliffs. Boat tours operate on the lagoon, or visitors can enjoy coffee at the Heads while taking in the views. The Knysna Forest encompasses approximately 80,000 hectares under conservation, home to the 600-year-old 'King Edward VII' tree at Diepwalle forest station (39m tall, 6m circumference) and the elusive Knysna elephants. The Pledge Nature Reserve offers 3½ km of pathways through scrub forest and fynbos, just 500m from town centre with views over the lagoon. Near Sedgefield, the Kaaimans River bridge was once the world's most-photographed railway bridge, part of the Outeniqua Choo-Tjoe steam train route.

Things To Do
Walk along the lagoon waterfront to the Heads, stopping at cafes along the way. Several championship golf courses offer stunning settings, including Pezula and Simola. Adventure operators like GoVertical Mountaineering Adventures at the waterfront provide abseiling, rock climbing, kloofing, trekking, and hiking experiences. The Featherbed Nature Reserve offers a 4-hour organized eco-tour including boat crossing, bus ride to hilltop viewpoints, a 2.2-km guided walk, and buffet lunch. Knysna Houseboats on Thesen Islands allow self-drive houseboat holidays on the tidal lagoon—no licence required, from R1,185 for two nights. The Knysna Elephant Park, halfway between Knysna and Plettenberg Bay on the N2, lets visitors feed and touch orphaned African elephants.

When To Go
Knysna's Mediterranean maritime climate brings rain throughout the year, but the Garden Route remains green and visitable in all seasons. Peak season brings higher prices and crowds, especially around major festivals. The Knysna Oyster Festival occurs mid-July, the Gastronomica Food and Wine Festival runs end September to early October, and the Pink Loerie Mardi Gras and Arts Festival takes place in late April.

Where To Stay
Many backpacker hostels, guesthouses, hotels, and B&Bs compete for visitors, with off-season offering better deals. In high season, prices rise and accommodations fill early—booking ahead is essential. Budget backpacker options include Island Vibe on Main Street (dorms R200 per person with free internet and pool), Knysna Backpackers on Queen Street (dorm bed R190), and Jembjo's Lodge on Queen Street (dorms from R200 with free breakfast and WiFi). Camping is available at Monks Caravan Park, 1 km from town towards Port Elizabeth (camping from R250 for two persons). For those with transport, options exist in Brenton-on-Sea and Buffalo Bay outside town.

Food And Drink
Knysna's culinary reputation centers on oysters and seafood, with many restaurants lining Main Street and the waterfront area. Freshline Fisheries offers what many consider the best value seafood (open 11:30AM-10PM). The Dry Dock at the waterfront provides great ambiance, while Ile de Pain on Thesen Island is known for homemade breads. Italian options include Persello's Pizzeria at Memorial Square near the public library, featuring wood-fired ovens and homemade pasta. Tapas and Oysters Knysna on Thesen Island serves from 11AM-10PM daily. Mitchell's Brewery on Arend Street offers brewery tours and tastings.

Day Trips
The Noetzie Castle, a few kilometres northeast of Knysna, features British-built castles on the beach worth a visit for a few hours or longer. Brenton-on-Sea offers less crowded beaches than Knysna. The Millwood Gold Fields near town show one of South Africa's first gold rushes, with the Millwood Museum and Materoli Tea Room (try Jayne's World Famous Chocolate Cake) offering tours through the old diggings. The Knysna Forest requires a car to access for hiking trails.
