Overview
Gelibolu (Gallipoli) occupies a strategic position midway down the peninsula, at the point where the Sea of Marmara narrows into the Dardanelles. The town controls the sea route linking the Mediterranean with Istanbul and the Black Sea, giving it significance since antiquity.

History
The town controls the Dardanelles straits and served as the Ottoman naval headquarters. Piri Reis, the famous cartographer, was born here.

Transport
Gelibolu sits on the European side of the Dardanelles with ferries to Lapseki (25 min, 15 TL adult, Aug 2023) running hourly. Buses from Istanbul take 4 hours and cost 230 TL.
